November 29, 2024 – There continues to be an above average number of sick wildlife – mainly racoons – reported and seen on Pelee Island. Many of the raccoons and other wildlife are showing signs consistent with the Canine Distemper Virus. The Township of Pelee has confirmed, with assistance from partner agencies, positive cases of Canine Distemper.
The Township of Pelee is Asking all Members of the Public to:
- Refrain from feeding or leaving food out for raccoons
- Take down any bird feeders or regularly clean up the area around the bird feeder so you do not attract raccoons
- Ensure all garbage is disposed of properly
- NOT approach raccoons or any wildlife, even if they seem tame
- Vaccinate your dogs against distemper
The Township of Pelee continues to explore potential mitigation options and is actively monitoring the situation.

REMINDER: Payment Options During the Mail Strike
There are several options available to ensure payments are received by the Township of Pelee by applicable deadlines during the Canada Post strike, including items such as tax and water bill payments.
- Telephone and/or internet banking options offered by your financial institution.
- Wire transfers, please contact the office to obtain necessary information.
- Email money transfers (for Canadian banking institutions) to m.feltz@pelee.ca.
- Cheques made out to “Township of Pelee” and deposited at the office weekdays Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

At the October 22, Regular Meeting of Council, four Members of Council declared a conflict with item 7. A. Report No. 2024 – 64 BT: Short Term Rentals.
As per section 7 of the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, regarding remedy for lack of quorum, subsection (1) Where the number of members who, by reason of the provisions of this Act, are disabled from participating in a meeting is such that at that meeting the remaining members are not of sufficient number to constitute a quorum, then, despite any other general or special Act, the remaining number of members shall be deemed to constitute a quorum, provided such number is not less than two.
Subsection 2 states, Where in the circumstances mentioned in subsection (1), the remaining number of members who are not disabled from participating in the meeting is less than two, the council or local board may apply to a judge without notice for an order authorizing the council or local board, as the case may be, to give consideration to, discuss and vote on the matter out of which the interest arises.
Further, subsection (3) states, The judge may, on an application brought under subsection (2), by order, declare that section 5, 5.1 or 5.2 does not apply to the council or local board, as the case may be, in respect of the matter in relation to which the application is brought, and the council or local board thereupon may give consideration to, discuss and vote on the matter in the same manner as though none of the members had any interest therein, subject only to such conditions and directions as the judge may consider appropriate and so order.
Therefore, the Report prepared by By-law Enforcement Officer, Bill Tetler, as well as the related delegation was deferred until Council obtains a Judicial ruling on Quorum and the following motion was passed:

WHEREAS at the Regular Meeting of Council on Tuesday October 22, 2024, a report titled Short Term Rentals prepared by By-Law Enforcement Officer Bill Tetler, was included on the agenda.
AND WHEREAS four Members of Council, out of five, declared a conflict of interest on this item. Members were as follows:

NEW THIS YEAR!
The Township of Pelee has a limited number of “No Trespassing / No Hunting” signs available to property owners of Pelee Island free of charge.
A limit of 10 signs per property has been set to allow for fair access to signage for all property owners. A waiver must be signed before signage is provided to property owners. Signage will be handed out on a first come, first serve basis.
Signage will be available for pickup beginning today, Monday September 9th, 2024.

The subject property is located on the north side of Homeward Road and is described Part Lot 40, Plan 338 being Part 2, 12R-22216. Section 3.1 of Zoning By-law 2012-24, as amended prohibits the construction or use of an accessory building prior to a main use or structure being on the property. A shed measuring less than 14.86m2 (160 square feet) has been constructed on the property prior to the construction of a main dwelling. The applicant is seeking permission to maintain the shed without a main use or structure on the property.

Essex County, July 30, 2024 – Ontario Nature is planning to do a prescribed burn on our Stone Road Alvar Nature Reserve located on Pelee Island.
The prescribed burn will be conducted by professional staff from Lands & Forests Consulting. Previous successful prescribed burns have been conducted on the Stone Road Alvar in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2005 and 2019. This year’s burn is scheduled to take place between August 26th and September 7th if weather and site conditions permit. The entire process is expected to take about three hours and occur between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Ontario Nature staff will be present on Stone Road to answer questions on the day of the burn.
