Pelee Drainage
The Township of Pelee is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, improvement and expansion of the Township’s municipal drains. There are approximately 77 municipal drains, which include a total of 87 kilometres of open and closed drainage systems. There are also three diesel operated pump stations that drain the interior areas of Pelee Island. For further information on drains, please visit the Ontario website with the following link to information on Ontario Drainage Act and other information in the section Drainage Forms and Information.
Drain Maintenance
Drainage works are maintained by the Township at the expense of the lands and roads that benefit and outlet per the current assessment schedule under an engineer’s report and bylaw. The Township operates a reactive drainage maintenance program which means a landowner or road authority must submit a request for maintenance. The following are projects that are considered drainage maintenance works:
- Annual Pump Operations
- Brushing of banks
- Bottom cleanout
- Culvert repairs
- Bank erosion control
- Catch basin cleanout and repairs
- Tile flushing
Please submit a request for The Municipal Drain Maintenance by filling out and emailing or dropping the form off at the Township Office.

Drain Repair and Improvement
Property owners can request Repair and Improvement on the whole or part of a municipal drain. All work requires an appointment of a drainage engineer to prepare a report. There are multiple legislative public meeting for landowners to provide input on the project.
- On Site Meeting
- Meeting to Consider
- Court of Revision
Common repair or improvement requests are:
- Change of use or subsequent connections
- New assessment schedule
- New access bridges or culverts (residential or agricultural)
- Replacement of existing bridges or culverts
- Installation of piping to enclose the drain
- Relocation of the drain
- Improvement of part or whole Municipal Drain
Please contact the Contract Drainage Superintendent to discuss the concerns or proposed project to obtain the property forms and process for completing the drainage improvements.
Drainage On-Site Meeting
Prior to the commencement of any Drain Maintenance or Drain Repair and Improvement project, an On-Site Meeting may be conducted to discuss the scope of the project. At the On-Site meeting, the Drainage Superintendent will be present to answer questions that affected residents may have. If the project requires more extensive drain repair or improvement, an engineer may also be present. If you have received a notice for an On-Site Meeting, the Township encourages you to participate. You may have valuable insight that could help to shape the scope of the project. If you are unable to attend the meeting, but still wish to be involved in the process, you can do so by contacting the Drainage Superintendent directly.
