Hunt FAQ

Is there a 2020 Pelee Island Pheasant Hunt?

Due to public health and safety concerns and in response to the uncertain future circumstances related to COVID-19, on April 14, 2020, the Council of the Corporation of the Township of Pelee made the difficult decision to cancel the Annual Pelee Island Pheasant Hunt for 2020.

We appreciate your patience as we work to process refunds and/or transfers for licences already purchased.  Please allow up to eight weeks for information to complete your refund.

Urgent inquiries can be directed by e-mail to peleehunts@pelee.ca (link sends email automatically).

The Township of Pelee would like to thank everyone for their continued support for our annual tradition and we hope to see you again in 2021.

How do you get to Pelee Island?

Most commonly by ferry from Kingsville, Ontario during the pheasant hunts, however air service from Griffing Flying Services or by private aircraft or personal watercraft are other available options.

Visit Getting Here for more details on travel options to Pelee Island.

What is the weather like during the hunts on Pelee?

Fall weather on Pelee Island can range from around 5-16 degrees Celsius, or 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Be prepared for anything from warm sunny days to the chance of cold, windy and rainy weather.

Is there any other hunting opportunities on Pelee?

Pelee offers a number of other hunting and fishing opportunities like turkey hunting in the spring, duck hunting in the fall, and access to Lake Erie fishing off the shores of Pelee to name just a few!

What is the price of a 2021 Pheasant Licence?

This year, main hunt licences cost $282.50, cleanup hunts are $141.25. Licences are one sale from January 4th to April 1, 2021. There will be no licence sales beyond April 1 this year.

What licences must I have in order to hunt pheasants on Pelee?

To hunt on Pelee Island you must have a municipal pheasant licence, your Ontario Small Games Licence as well as an Ontario Outdoors Card.

Visit Getting your Outdoors Card or Ontario Hunting Regulations for further information.

Is anything open on Pelee during the hunts?

As the hunts occur outside of the island’s main tourist season, some businesses are already closed when the Pheasant Hunts occur. However, there are still a number of places open to visit! These include places like the Legion, Westview Tavern, Coop (gas & groceries), as well as many accommodations options.

Are hunting dogs a must?

Though a hunting dog is not required for this hunt, many hunters choose to utilize hunting dogs on Pelee Island, as they may enrich the hunting experience and allow for birds to be easily flushed compared to hunting without a helpful companion.
