Message from the Mayor
As part of a pilot project with the Ministry of Transportation, the Township of Pelee is allowing golf cars to operate on certain roads. This project will be monitored and reviewed to make sure that we can accommodate neighbourhood golf cars safely within our community.
As of July 27th, 2021, Golf Cars with the mandatory municipal registration permit were allowed on municipal roadways for which the prescribed rate of speed is 50 kilometres per hour or lower.
The continued responsible implementation of this pilot program can provide for economic development opportunities, increased tourism and addresses alternative transportation options for our residents.
I would like to remind the public that safety is the number one priority for our community. This By-Law and any related provision of the Highway Traffic Act will be enforced by the Ontario Provincial Police.
As such, please review the contents of your municipal registration package carefully: By-Law 2021 – 21, as amended, in full along with the Ontario Golf Cart Pilot Program: Best Practice Municipal Guidelines for Pelee Island and Huron-Kinloss, in addition to understanding the needed modifications for all golf cars, permitted roads for use, and required documentation and information to obtain a municipal Golf Car registration permit.
For more information, contact the Township Office at 519-724-2931 or email info@pelee.ca. Information may also be found below.
Please operate your golf car with care and courtesy at all times for the safety of our residents and visitors.
Sincerely,
Mayor Cathy Miller

How to Obtain a Municipal Golf Car Permit
To obtain a municipal golf car permit, there is a couple steps you will need to undertake. Any person who wishes to register their golf car for use on municipal roadways should become familiar with By-Law 2021 – 21, as amended, and will be required to review their obligations as per Schedule 2 of By-Law 2021 – 21, certifying that they acknowledge and agree to all identified points.
The Registration & Indemnification Agreement Forms will need to be filled out in full, with the addition of a copy of the applicants public liability insurance policy of not less than $1,000,000.00 with rider to provide for the use of golf car on public roadways, as well as a copy of the applicants Drivers Licence – both provided to the Township upon registration.
Once the above is completed and brought to the Municipal Office for approval, the registration fee will be collected and a vinyl permit sticker will be provided – which will be required to be affixed to the driver’s side front fender in a prominent position, easily viewed by OPP. A registration package will also be provided to all those who register for a golf car permit, including By-Law 2021 – 21, Best Practices Guidelines, Pelee Island Golf Car Map & Required Golf Car Specifications.
