Snake and Salamander Sleuthing at Stone Road Alvar Nature Reserve
–
September 4, 2015
Catch the ferry over to Pelee Island and join Ontario Nature at the stunning Stone Road Alvar Nature Reserve to lay down monitoring boards for snakes and salamanders. We will be setting up cover board monitoring plots that will be checked over the course of a 3-year study to monitor species abundance. Stone Road Alvar is home to amazing reptile diversity, and your help in setting up cover boards will help us monitor these special species.
Friday September 4th from 12:30pm to 2:30pm.
Please RSVP to megana@ontarionature.org
Directions: Stone Road Alvar Nature Reserve is located on Pelee Island and can be reached by a ferry from Leamington or Kingsville from late March to early December. Book ahead if you plan to take your vehicle across.
On the island, take the Shore Road south to East-West Road. Follow this road east for 4km until you come to a densely wooded area on the south side of the road. Turn south onto Stone Road and continue just past the old schoolhouse on the right side. Here there is a narrow opening in the thickets, where a gravel path into the nature reserve has been established. To help protect the rare, fragile species that are present, please walk on the gravel nature trail only.
More information: Please wear long pants and close-toed shoes. Bring a hat, raincoat (if necessary) and waterbottle. This family friendly event will be held rain or shine.
