Municipal Election Information Session

There will be a Zoom session for candidates on April 28, 2022, beginning at 6:00 pm. If you are interested in running in the upcoming election, register to see a presentation by former LaSalle Mayor Ken Antaya and representatives from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
Information to be discussed during the seminar includes the following:
- The role of local and county councils
- The role of municipal staff
- Nominations and candidate eligibility
- Candidate and third-party advertising rules and duties
- General campaign rules and election finances

Becoming a Candidate
If a person wishes to run as a candidate in a Township of Pelee municipal election, they must file nomination forms with the Clerk. The first day to file nomination forms for the next municipal election will be May 2, 2022.
The nomination must be completed in full and filed in person by the candidate or an agent of the candidate and include:
- Identification suitable to the Clerk;
- Nomination Paper- Form 1;
- Endorsement signatures from 25 people who are eligible to vote in the municipality- Endorsement Signatures- Form 2 (not required for Township of Pelee); and
- Applicable application filing fee ($200 Mayor, $100 all other offices).

Forms
For your convenience, forms are available for download below, alternatively the Nomination Paper can also be picked up at the Township of Pelee Municipal Office, Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. Completed forms must be dropped off at the Municipal Office beginning May 2, 2022 at 9:00 am to August 18, 2022 at 4:30 pm as well as August 19, 2022 9:00 am to 2:00 pm to file the paperwork with the Clerk.
The nomination of a person for an office on council must be endorsed by at least 25 eligible electors. However, the endorsement requirement does not apply to a nomination in a municipality in which the number of electors who were eligible to vote in the 2018 election was less than 4000 (i.e. the prescribed number). This exemption applies to the Township of Pelee.

Who is eligible to be a candidate for Council?
To run for an office on Council, a candidate must be qualified on the day he or she files the nomination paper and maintain their eligibility throughout the campaign period and, if elected, throughout the term of council.
To run for Council (mayor or councillor) a person must be:
- A Canadian citizen
- At least 18 years of age
- A resident of the Township of Pelee or own or lease property (or be the spouse of the owner or lessee) in the Township of Pelee
- Not legally prohibited from voting
- Not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office

Who is eligible to be a candidate for School Board Trustee?
To run for an office on a School Board, a candidate must be qualified on the day he or she files the nomination paper.
To run for School Board Trustee the person must be:
- A Canadian citizen
- At least 18 years of age
- A resident in the area of jurisdiction of the board
- Eligible to be an Elector for the school board in which the person is a candidate
- Not legally prohibited from voting
- Not disqualified by any legislation from holding office
English-Language Public District School Board
Candidate must:
- be a supporter of the English-language public district school board; or
- not be a supporter of any board, nor have qualified himself or herself as an Elector for a separate or French-language school board in the election
English-Language Separate District School Board
Candidate must be Roman Catholic who must:
- qualify as an Elector for the English-language separate district school board; or
- be a supporter (or be the spouse of a supporter) of the English-language separate district school board
Conseil scolaire Viamonde (French-Language Public District School Board)
Candidate must be a French-language rights holder (see ss. 23(1) and (2) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms for criteria) who must:
- qualify as an Elector for the French-language public district school board; or
- be a supporter (or the spouse of a supporter) of the French-language public district school board.
Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (French-Language Separate District School Board)
A candidate must be Roman Catholic and a French-language rights holder (see the Charter for criteria) who must:
- qualify as an Elector for the French-language separate district school board; or
- be a supporter (or the spouse of a supporter) of the French-language separate district school board.

Key Dates for Election Candidates

August 19, 2022 – Nomination Day (nominations may only be filed at the Municipal Office between 9:00am and 2:00pm)
October 21, 2022 – Last day for third party advertisers to file their notice of registration
October 24, 2022 – Election Day
November 15, 2022 – New term of office commences
